Sonicorbitor - native DSD support for NuPrime Evolution DAC

I have been happily using this DAC for a year, fed by my MacBook Pro (with Roon and HQPlayer) into ultraRendu (with upgraded Sonore LPS). I am limited to DSD128 due to DoP due to MacOS and Evo DAC's 384K max PCM input rate for USB. I am pondering whether to splurge on a dedicated Windows PC to move up to native DSD256. There is an ASIO driver is for Windows. Would the ultraRendu be able to output native DSD to the Evo DAC with ASIO on the PC?

ASIO won’t play a role here. You should be able to play native DSD either way to the Rendu.

Hmmm, Perhaps I’m confused about settings. When I enable DSD in SonicOrbitor in Roon Ready, Roon disables DSD settings. Same with HQPlayer - if I set DoP Pack to None in it, then it outputs only PCM even though all settings show DSD. Here are my other SonicOrbitor settings. Maybe I need to contact NuPrime?

Do not use the Custom DAC configuration page. Delete the entry there and press Save. Then go to Settings / RoonReady and press Save.

Thanks for continuing to help. Still no luck. Deleting the DAC ends up creating another one when I save. I have attached Roon diagnostics, first with DSD set to Native, then to DoP, in case that helps. This DAC is not Roon Ready, so maybe that is the issue. Same behaviour as before with HQPlayer.

I just did an update just in case, and still no difference 🙁

”special DAC” gets filled in after I delete then save. I tried deleting without saving (which leaves name blank), but still no difference. Then I rebooted, and DAC name stayed blank, but still no difference. Hit Save and “special DAC” came back.

I’m doing both Roon and HQPlayer testing with each try. If Roon Ready is set to Native DSD in SO, then DSD disappears from Device Settings and sample rate options in Roon. HQPlayer always plays PCM if I change SDM pack to none, even though I have confirmed that default output is set to DSD. In HQPlayer, I even tried disabling 48K just in case but no difference.

I appreciate your continuing effort with this! Hopefully it is just something simple and dumb that I’m doing. 🤔

Are you applying any form of digital signal processing?

For Roon, yes I am just upsampling Tidal HiFi to DSD. If I set SO Roon Ready to Native DSD, then Roon app immediately loses ability to convert to DSD. Setting RR in SO to DoP, DSD upsampling comes back. Roon volume is set to fixed, and volume leveling and cross fade are disabled; also SO RR volume is set to 100%.

HQPlayer of course is all about DSP.

Sonic Orbiter 2.8 on the Rendu series now supports native DSD on the NuPrime Evolution DAC.
